If you run your own mail server, what happens to your email when your:
- internet connection goes down?
- power fails?
- server fails?
- server is busy?
- server re-starts?
- server shuts down?
- server is maintained?
If you have Backup Email Service (a Secondary MX) you get all of your email
when your server comes back on line. Here's a quick description of how the
backup mail service works.
- We set up your domain name on one of our our backup mail servers.
- We add a secondary MX record to your DNS (pointing to the backup mail
server).
- If a sender can not contact your primary mail server for any reason,
they deliver the message to the secondary server (us).
- Our backup mail server is a "store and forward" relay server that stores
the message and attempts to forward to your server.
- Our back up server will store your messages for up to 5 days, attempting
delivery every 6 hours. When your mail server comes back on line after an
outage, your accumulated email gets delivered through automatically within 6
hours.
You can substitute the 25
user IMail server, which we include with selected hosting packages, for Email Backup Service. Please ask an Account Executive
for more information
